Galapagos cricket - actually Large Painted Locust

Galapagos cricket - actually Large Painted Locust - Galapagos Islands
This insect was large - about 8cm in length. They blend into their background well - we almost missed this one.
This image is the most viewed on my website so I thought I should find out something more about it to add here. So I got in touch with the Darwin Foundation and it turns out to be a Large Painted Locust, not a cricket at all. It is endemic to the Galapagos Islands. It is eaten by the Galapagos hawks and lava lizards as a large part of their diet. (Noted 5th January 2012)
